Health Week in Pendle

Pendle’s Up & Active Team is hosting a Health Week to encourage people of all ages to get fitter and healthier.

From September 16th – 24th, a full week of free, fun, information and activities has been organised, including a Family Sports Day, Tai Chi in the park, health checks, Weight Management Roadshows, lunchtime walks, Healthy Eating/Green Day, Pendle Hill walk, Walking Football Tournament, school workshops and taster fitness classes.

The week kicks off with a Family Sports Day on Saturday, September 16th, at Seedhill Athletics and Fitness Centre, Nelson.

From 10am, all the family are invited to join in the fun, games, competitions and activities, with teams of six competing in a number of traditional sporting challenges, including 100m, 200m, high jump, long jump, javelin, welly throw, 3-legged race, egg and spoon race, tug of war and a relay race.

There will also be a penalty shoot-out, games, activities, face-painting and a bouncy castle for the youngsters.

Pendle Health Week taster sessions

Throughout the week, there will be Weight Management Roadshows at health centres in Nelson, Colne and Earby, where members of the Up & Active team will be handing out information on weight management, health, well-being and Up & Active’s services and programmes.

On Wednesday, September 20th, everyone is invited to a Healthy Eating/ Green Day between 10am and 3pm at the Good Life, Hodge House Allotments, Reedyford Road, Nelson, with cookery demonstrations, grow your own workshops, craft sessions and a smoothie bike.

During the week, there will be plenty of walking activities, including a group walk up Pendle Hill, a Walking Football Tournament and daily 30-60 minute lunchtime walks setting off from Seedhill Athletics and Fitness Centre, Nelson.

There will also be a Tai Chi class and health checks in Victoria Park, Nelson.

 The Up & Active team will be educating young schoolchildren through fun and interactive workshops. Key Stage 2 pupils will learn about weight management and healthy eating combined with fun games and activities.

The Health Week will end on Sunday, September 24th, with the Up & Active team getting involved in Pedal Pendle at the Steven Burke Cycle & Sports Hub, Barrowford. Staff will have a stand with information and activities, including adapted bikes and Balanceability for children.

Up & Active Manager, Clive Escreet, said: “As part of the scheduled events and activities, a number of themes will be used, including A Mile A Day; With the slogan ‘Your Mile, Your Way’, people will be encouraged to try and complete a mile every day this week, whether it’s walking, running or cycling.

  • “We will be teaching people key numbers which play an important role in a healthy lifestyle and also encouraging them to ‘Eat A Rainbow’ with more fruit and vegetables.
  • “And there will be the opportunity to try a range of different 15 minute fitness classes at all Pendle Leisure Trust’s centres – Pendle Wavelengths, Pendle Leisure Centre and West Craven Sports Centre.
  • “There really will be an awful lot going on for all ages – some informative, some interesting, but all of it fun!”
